As the seasons prepare to change, financial services law firm Murphy & McGonigle is also experiencing a transition. Elizabeth Lan Davis, Shareholder in the Firm’s Commodities, Futures & Derivatives; FinTech & Blockchain; and White Collar Defense, Investigations & Compliance Counseling practices, becomes just the second Chair and President of Murphy & McGonigle in its history today.
Ms. Davis assumes leadership of the Firm following the 11-year tenure of firm Co-Founder James A. Murphy, who served as Chair and President since its inception. Ms. Davis, who joined Murphy & McGonigle in 2018, is an 18-year veteran of two federal government agencies. She served for nine years at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, most recently as a Chief Trial Attorney in the Division of Enforcement, and before that served as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice for nine years.
In June, the Shareholders of Murphy & McGonigle unanimously elected Ms. Davis to serve as the Firm’s next Chair, making her the first woman of color to lead the Firm.
"I am honored to help lead this all-star team of lawyers into its next phase and build upon the strong foundation that James Murphy has achieved in growing from scratch a law firm that is unlike any other in the financial services sector," said Ms. Davis.
Mr. Murphy led the Firm through a dynamic first 11 years of existence that has included its founding, growth, and the highly ambitious but realized goal of becoming a leader in financial services law amidst a field of competitors who have dotted the legal landscape for 100 years or more. For instance, Murphy & McGonigle was named "Law Firm of the Year" for Securities Regulation, the first boutique law firm to be so honored, by U.S. News – Best Law Firms in 2021.
"I couldn't be more delighted that Liz has agreed to assume leadership of our Firm," Murphy said following Ms. Davis’ election. "Her legal skills and judgment are universally respected among our clients and our partners. Everyone here recognized Liz as the ideal person to lead the firm to even greater heights through her collaborative and team-oriented approach."
Ms. Davis is an active member of various diversity organizations and an advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to furthering the Firm’s presence in the financial services industry, one of her primary goals is to continue to advocate for greater diversity within the Firm and in the legal and financial services industries.
